Vue vs React: Which Framework Fits Your Project
Vue uses a template syntax with a reactive proxy system; React uses JSX with a virtual DOM. How the two frameworks differ and when to pick each.
Vue and React both let you build UIs out of reusable components, but they get there differently: Vue tracks changes with a reactive proxy system and compiles templates ahead of time, while React re-renders a virtual DOM tree and diffs it against the last render. The practical differences show up in syntax, state management, and how much the framework decides for you versus how much you wire up yourself.
Reactivity: proxies vs virtual DOM diffing
Vue’s reactivity system wraps your data in a Proxy. When you write state.count++, Vue intercepts that assignment and knows precisely which parts of the DOM depend on count, so it updates only those nodes. This is fine-grained reactivity — similar in spirit to the signals model used by Svelte and SolidJS, though Vue’s implementation predates the recent signals wave.
React takes a different approach. Calling a state setter (setCount(count + 1)) triggers a re-render of the component function, which produces a new virtual DOM tree. React diffs that tree against the previous one and applies only the resulting patches to the real DOM. The component re-runs even though only one value changed — React relies on the diffing algorithm, and increasingly on the compiler in newer versions, to keep this cheap.
Neither approach touches the real DOM more than necessary, but the mental model differs: Vue tracks dependencies at the property level, React re-evaluates render functions and reconciles the output.
Template syntax vs JSX
Vue’s default authoring style is HTML-like templates with directives:

Vue’s templates are easier for designers and newcomers to read, and the compiler can statically analyze them to skip re-rendering static parts of the tree entirely. JSX gives you the full power of JavaScript in your markup — conditionals, loops, and expressions all work the same way they do everywhere else in the language — at the cost of a slightly steeper learning curve for anyone coming from plain HTML.
State management and composition
Vue ships built-in primitives — ref, reactive, computed — as part of its Composition API, so most apps need no external state library for local and shared component state. Pinia, Vue’s official store, is a thin layer on top for cross-component state.
React’s core library is deliberately minimal: useState and useReducer cover local state, but anything shared across a large tree typically reaches for Context, or an external library like Redux or Zustand. This is a tradeoff, not a deficiency — React’s smaller surface area means more decisions live in userland, which gives you more flexibility but less consistency across projects.

Server rendering and meta-frameworks
Neither Vue nor React is typically used bare in production — most teams reach for a meta-framework that adds routing, data fetching, and rendering strategy. Nuxt plays that role for Vue. For React, React Server Components have become part of the framework’s own story, letting components render on the server and stream HTML to the client without shipping their JavaScript. Ecosystem and hiring
React’s ecosystem is larger by almost any measure: more libraries, more Stack Overflow answers, more job postings. That size cuts both ways — more options, but also more fragmentation, since there’s no single “correct” way to fetch data or manage state in React. Vue’s ecosystem is smaller but more standardized; the official router, state library, and testing tools are the obvious choices, which reduces decision fatigue on new projects.
For teams building a progressive web app or anything with heavy client-side interactivity, both frameworks are proven at scale — Vue powers large consumer products in Asia and Europe, React powers a large share of the English-speaking web’s biggest sites.
Which should you choose
Pick Vue if your team leans toward HTML/CSS-first development, wants more decisions made for you out of the box, or is migrating from a jQuery-style codebase incrementally. Pick React if you want the largest talent pool and library ecosystem, need React Server Components’ server/client split, or your organization already has React expertise to draw on. Both are mature, well-funded, and not going anywhere — the choice is closer to a cultural and ecosystem fit than a technical one.

Vue and React solve the same problem — reactive, component-based UI — with different tradeoffs. Vue’s proxy-based reactivity and template syntax favor a gentler learning curve and more built-in conventions; React’s virtual DOM and JSX favor flexibility and a larger ecosystem at the cost of more upfront decisions. Neither is objectively faster or better for most apps; the deciding factors are usually team background, hiring pool, and how much structure you want the framework to impose.
